Laneway garages
In older neighbourhoods like Leslieville, the Annex, Little Italy and Roncesvalles, the garage often sits at the back of the lot facing a laneway. Those garages tend to be narrow, sometimes a few inches off standard sizes, and many still have an old wood or single-skin steel door. When the door finally goes, the opening usually needs measuring for a door made to fit.
Tight lanes also mean bumped doors, bent bottom sections and doors knocked off the track. A dented section can often be replaced on its own if the maker still produces it. If the wood frame around the opening has rotted, we replace it and can wrap it in aluminum capping so it stays dry.
Repairs across the rest of the city
Houses in North York and Scarborough are more likely to have an attached garage, and the repairs are the familiar ones: torsion springs that snap, cables that fray, openers that hum but won’t lift. If a spring has broken, leave the door closed. See our garage door repair page for what a visit includes. In the west end, we have a separate page for garage door repair in Etobicoke.
Condo and commercial doors
A condo building depends on the overhead door at its parking ramp. When it stops working, residents can’t get their cars in or out. We install and repair commercial sectional and rolling steel doors, and we can set up scheduled maintenance for property managers. See commercial garage doors.
Booking a visit
Our shop is at 4120 Ridgeway Drive in Mississauga. Call, tell us what the door is doing and your neighbourhood, and we’ll give you a time. Downtown jobs sometimes need parking or lane access sorted first, so mention that when you call. You get the price before any work starts.
Questions from Toronto homeowners
Can you replace the door on a laneway garage?
Yes. We measure the opening, check the frame and quote a door to fit. If the frame needs work, that goes on the quote too.
Can I put an opener on a detached garage?
If there’s power near the ceiling and the door is balanced, yes. Some older laneway garages have no power at all, and you’d need an electrician to run it first.
Do you service parking garage doors for condos?
Yes. We repair and maintain commercial overhead doors, including the doors at underground parking entrances.
