Older garages in the lower city
A lot of houses below the escarpment, in neighbourhoods like Westdale, Kirkendall and Crown Point, were built before attached garages were common. Many have a detached garage at the back of the lot, sometimes reached from a laneway, with a door that’s been patched more than once. Those doors often run on extension springs along the sides instead of a torsion spring over the opening, and the springs and cables stretch and wear over the years.
If an older door needs more than a spring, we’ll tell you whether a replacement section or a new door makes more sense. Older openings are sometimes an odd size, so a new door may need to be made to fit. We measure it ourselves before quoting.
Newer homes on the Mountain and in Stoney Creek
Subdivisions on the Mountain, in Stoney Creek, Binbrook and Waterdown mostly have attached double garages with openers. The usual repairs there are broken torsion springs, frayed cables and openers that stop partway or reverse. Our garage door repair page covers what a visit includes.
New doors and openers
We install insulated steel, carriage-style, and aluminum and glass doors from Steel-Craft, Amarr and Hörmann, along with LiftMaster openers. You get a written quote after we measure. See residential garage doors.
Industrial doors
Hamilton still runs on heavy industry, along the harbour and in business parks near the Red Hill Valley Parkway and the airport. We install and repair sectional overhead doors, rolling steel doors and dock equipment, and we can schedule preventative maintenance for doors that run every shift. See industrial and commercial overhead doors.

Questions from Hamilton homeowners
My old garage door is very heavy to lift. Is that normal?
No. A balanced door should stay put about halfway up and lift with one hand. If it’s heavy, the springs have lost tension or one has broken. Stop using the opener on it, because a heavy door wears the opener out.
Can you make a door for a non-standard opening?
Yes. We measure and order a door built to that size. Custom sizes take longer than stock doors, and you’ll get the timing with your quote.
Do you come to Ancaster, Dundas and Stoney Creek?
Yes. They’re all part of Hamilton, and the same number works: (905) 257-7211.
