Snow, ice and the bottom seal
Barrie gets more snow than most of southern Ontario, much of it lake-effect snow off Georgian Bay. Snow piled against a garage door melts during the day and freezes along the bottom seal overnight, and by morning the door is stuck to the floor. When the opener tries to lift it, the seal tears or the opener strains. Clearing snow back from the door after each storm prevents most of this, and a flattened or cracked seal is worth replacing before winter.
Insulation is worth paying for here too. An insulated steel door keeps an attached garage warmer through a long winter and helps the room above it. We install insulated doors from Steel-Craft, Amarr and Hörmann. See residential garage doors.
Repairs on newer and older homes
Most homes in areas like Ardagh, Holly and Painswick are newer, with attached double garages and openers. The repairs there are springs, cables and openers. Older homes near downtown and in Allandale are more likely to have a detached garage and an older door on extension springs. Our garage door repair page covers what we fix.
Commercial doors
For shops, warehouses and industrial units in Barrie, we install and repair sectional overhead doors and rolling steel doors, and we can schedule maintenance in the fall so doors are ready for winter. See commercial garage doors.
How booking works
Our shop is at 4120 Ridgeway Drive in Mississauga. We don’t have a Barrie office. Call, tell us what the door is doing and where you are, and we’ll give you a date. You get the price before any work starts.
Questions from Barrie homeowners
Why does my garage door freeze to the ground?
Water and snow collect under the bottom seal and freeze overnight. Keep the area in front of the door clear, and replace a flattened seal so water can’t pool under it. Don’t force a frozen door with the opener.
Is an insulated garage door worth it in Barrie?
For an attached garage, usually yes. It keeps the garage warmer and quieter and helps any room above it. For a detached garage you don’t heat, a non-insulated door can be fine.
Do you install openers with battery backup?
Yes. LiftMaster makes openers with battery backup, so the door still opens during a power outage.
