Builder-grade doors wear out on a schedule

A lot of Kitchener and Waterloo homes were built in the last twenty years, in areas like Doon, Laurentian Hills and Laurelwood. Many still have the door and opener the builder put in. The torsion springs on a standard door are commonly rated for about 10,000 open-and-close cycles. Use the door four times a day and that’s roughly seven years, which is why so many of these calls are for a spring that snapped one morning without warning.

Springs, lift cables, rollers and openers are the repairs we handle most. If a spring has broken, don’t try to lift the door yourself. With the spring gone, the door is far heavier than it looks. Read more on our garage door repair page.

Upgrading from a builder-grade door

If you’re replacing the original door, you have more choices than the builder gave you. We install insulated steel doors, carriage-style doors with windows, and aluminum and glass doors from Steel-Craft, Amarr and Hörmann. A new LiftMaster opener with Wi-Fi lets you open the door for a delivery or check it’s closed from your phone. See residential garage doors and residential openers.

Commercial doors in Waterloo Region

For warehouses and industrial units, including Huron Business Park, we install and repair sectional overhead doors, rolling steel doors and dock equipment. We also set up preventative maintenance, so springs and cables on doors that run all day get replaced before they fail.

Questions from Kitchener and Waterloo homeowners

How long does a garage door spring last?

Standard torsion springs are commonly rated for about 10,000 cycles, which works out to roughly seven years at four cycles a day. Heavier use wears them out sooner. Higher-cycle springs are available when we replace them.

Can you add a Wi-Fi opener to my existing door?

Usually. If the door is balanced and in good shape, we can fit a LiftMaster opener with Wi-Fi. If the springs are worn, we’ll tell you first, because a new opener on a badly balanced door wears out fast.

Do you come to Waterloo as well as Kitchener?

Yes. We take jobs in both cities. Call (905) 257-7211 and tell us your address.
