What Ottawa winters do to a garage door
Ottawa winters run colder than the GTA’s, and garage doors feel it. The rubber bottom seal can freeze to the concrete overnight. When the opener tries to lift a door that’s stuck to the floor, it can strip its drive gear or rip the seal off the bottom panel. Road salt that drips off the car sits against the bottom section and the ends of the tracks all winter, which is usually where rust starts on a steel door.
The repairs we handle for Ottawa homes:
- Broken torsion and extension springs
- Lift cables that have frayed or slipped off the drum
- Bottom seals that are torn, flattened or frozen to the floor
- Openers that hum, reverse or stop partway
- Dented or bent sections, and doors that have come off the track
You can read more about the work on our garage door repair page.
New garage doors for Ottawa homes
If you’re replacing a door, insulation matters more here than it does in Mississauga. An insulated steel door keeps an attached garage warmer and cuts the cold air reaching the room above it. We install steel, carriage-style, and aluminum and glass doors from Steel-Craft, Amarr and Hörmann, along with LiftMaster openers. Someone measures the opening first, and you get a written quote before we order anything. See our residential garage doors for styles.
Commercial doors in Ottawa
For warehouses, shops and plants we install and repair sectional overhead doors, rolling steel doors and loading dock equipment. If you manage a building in Kanata or Nepean, book a maintenance visit in the fall. A door that seizes in January can hold up deliveries until it’s fixed. More on our commercial garage doors page.
How booking works from Mississauga
Our shop is at 4120 Ridgeway Drive in Mississauga, a long drive from Ottawa. We don’t have an Ottawa office, and we won’t pretend to. When you call, tell us what the door is doing and where you are, whether that’s Barrhaven, Orléans or Stittsville, and we’ll tell you when a technician can get there. You get the price before any work starts.
If your door is stuck open, still call. We’ll tell you how soon a crew can get to you, and if we can’t get there in time, we’ll say so on the phone.
Questions from Ottawa homeowners
My garage door is frozen to the ground. What should I do?
Stop pressing the opener button. An opener pulling on a door that’s frozen to the floor can strip its gear or tear the bottom seal. Chip the ice away from the seal with a plastic scraper, not a metal one, then try again. If it still won’t lift, call us.
Do you install insulated garage doors?
Yes. We install insulated steel doors from Steel-Craft, Amarr and Hörmann. Ask about insulation when we quote, and we’ll show you the options for your opening.
Will you repair a door you didn’t install?
Yes. We repair all makes and models, including older doors and openers.
